Embryo Donation Benefits and Associated Costs
Paths to Parenthood: Receiving an Embryo Donation
Embryo donation is a form of third party reproduction in which unused embryos are donated to another woman..
When a woman or couple donates her/his/their embryos, they give another person the opportunity to be pregnant and to give birth. Although the child born from
this process is legally the recipient's, the genetic characteristics will originate
from the original donors of the oocytes and sperm. It’s worth considering that women who contribute their unused embryos do not receive any payment, with the exception of reimbursable expenses like cryopreservation
The concept of EB can offer a potential solution to the problem of “biological clock” with IVF for elderly women and those with DOR, in comparison with the routine IVF using egg donors.
Donor-assisted conception includes not just the use of gametes like sperm and eggs but
also the donation of embryos. In the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), it
is standard to create more embryos that can be safely implanted during a single
procedure, resulting in the cryopreservation of excess embryos for later use. For many
couples and individuals, embryo donation is a vital route to achieving parenthood. While
requests for embryo donation are less common than those for traditional IVF or single
gamete donations, there is a noticeable increase in interest.
Reasons to Consider Embryo Donation
Repeated IVF Challenges
Couples dealing with a series of failed IVF attempts may feel that there is hope in embryo donation. This alternative offers the opportunity to use high quality embryos from completed donors, which may improve their chances of success in particular following recurrent implantation failures or for unexplained infertility
Genetic Considerations
For those who are worried about genetics and potentially passing on a genetic disease, embryo donation may be the right one. Embryo donation carries some serum for couples, who have had genetic testing and yearly assurance that their future children are genetically healthy; this is particularly true of carriers with serious disorders.
Infertility Related to Age
Women are not able to be fertile forever, so for some in the late 30s and 40s Embryo Donor is a great option. Utilizing embryos from young donors can greatly increase the chances of a pregnancy, enabling even older women to become mothers.
Donation of surplus embryos represents a practical solution for patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization who would face the option of donating their embryos for research or discarding them. Emotional aspects about the decision to donate surplus embryos can be quite different from donating eggs or sperm. Discussion of this topic is also important during patient counseling and informed consent.
It is important to discuss what can be done with "extra" embryos early in the IVF process. A main difference between embryo donation and double donation is the more rational use of scarce resources, preventing the production of an excessive number of spare embryos.
Thanks to EDS's partnerships with three independent private fertility clinics in Kyiv, we can now provide a wide array of surplus double-donation embryos. Some of these embryos come from local Ukrainian couples, while others are from international families who have completed their journeys and consented to donation.
